Bourne Woods,

A mixed day of walking through a mixed countryside of pine, sand, silver birches open heath land, woods, mud etc Weather kind no rain and some wintry sun

Again the LWG showed its camaraderie off at its shiny best Our poor host of the Holly Bush threw a small hissy fit when 16 members turned up for lunch instead of the booked 10 (and who would blame her when you saw our muddy boots) and felt reluctant to feed us But LWG members ralled in support of each other and ordered extra food for the booked 10 which was paased to the unwelcome 6. Good food enjoyed

Travel:

There is no suitable public transport so please LWG Yahoo Group and LWG Directory for lift shares.

By Car: Take the A3 to Guildford then follow the A31 Hogs Back to Farnham following signs to the station. At the station continue straight on towards Tilford and after about 5 minutes (1 2/3rds of a mile) you will find the car park on your right

Route:

This walk takes you on a remarkable hike through the isolated pine-clad sandy hills of western Surrey. It features a 4-mile stretch of almost unbroken woodland and heath and a turn around Frensham Little Pond. Some ups and downs but nothing too daunting. No stiles. Good views. Bird sanctuaries and a re-acquaintance with the river Wey

Lunch:

The Holly Bush in Frensham village. They insist there is no need to pre order and service was excellent when I visited. Standard Sunday pub menu but no sandwiches. I have booked a table for 10 (their max number for booking) so be prepared to have walking members sitting on your lap. That's a joke -there is plenty of room.

Notes:

This may be your first visit to the Forestry Commission’s Bourne Wood but it’s almost certain you’ve seen it before.. The reason is the dozens of films and TV productions that have used the wood as a location, including Gladiator, several Harry Potters and Ridley Scott's Robin Hood. The name comes from a branch of the nearby River Wey whose source was known as the “Bourne”.
