Old Warden & Norhill Fishponds, Bedfordshire
9 of us enjoyed a delightful walk in a rather overlooked part of England - gorgeous fields of waving corn & barley. Plenty of wild flowers, butterflies and damselflies. The weather was perfect: not as forecast! And even an air show for old plane enthusiasts.
9:13 am from King’s Cross (destination Peterborough). Return trains from Biggleswade on the hour and the half hour. Freedom pass holders may purchase online return tickets from Boundary 6 New Barnet station
Drivers should aim for the A 6001 London Road on the A1 (M). There is limited street parking near Biggleswade Town Station. Train recommended.
Circular walk in typical Bedfordshire countryside, mostly flat with gentle gradients leading to pretty hilltop villages and shallow valleys with thatched cottages. The footpaths cut across wide corn fields, pass by lakes and reservoirs and traverse dense woodlands. At the centre of the route is the celebrated Shuttleworth Estate with its collection of veteran and vintage aircraft. Before lunch we will visit Queen Anne’s summerhouse on the estate, a folly never actually visited by HM.
