Travel:

Train only. 9.12 train from London Marylebone to Gerrards Cross. The Freedom Pass takes you out as far as West Ruislip. You need to buy a single ticket from there to Gerrards Cross: £2.85

Return from Cookham along the Marlow Branch line (trains at 44 mins past each hour). A single from Cookham to Maidenhead costs £2. From Maidenhead, the Elizabeth Line (free to Freedom Pass holders) brings you back to London, stopping at Ealing Broadway, Acton Main Line, Paddington, Bond Street whichever suits you best.

Route:

The route is easy walking, with 2 easy stiles. It is generally pretty flat, but with some long gentle inclines. When reccied, there was a little mud, but not enough to complain about.

Once Gerrards Cross has been left behind, it proceeds through Bulstrode Park (once briefly owned by the infamous Judge Jeffreys), passes through Hedgerley, Buckinghamshire’s prettiest village, and skirts just to the north of Burnham Beeches National Nature Reserve through woodland owned by the Portman Estate. After lunch at The Blackwood Arms, Littleworth Common, it follows the Beeches Way down through Hedsor to the Thames and the bridge over to Cookham and Cookham station.

Lunch:

Typical pub Sunday lunch. Here is a link to their website, where there is a Sunday menu. https://www.theblackwoodarms.co.uk/ They don’t require us to pre-order, but we do have to get there by 12.30. Although we have the table until 2.30, we should also need to leave before then to get to Cookham station before dark.
